COSMETIC PROCEDURES

WHAT IS COSMETIC SURGERY?

Cosmetic surgery refers to procedures used to enhance the physical appearance of the face and specific body parts.

WHAT TYPES OF COSMETIC SURGERIES DOES DR BOTHA PERFORM?

Breast Surgeries

Breast surgery aims to modify, enhance, or reshape breast tissue. For example, breast augmentation enhances the size of the breasts by placing breast implants beneath the breast tissue. Breast reduction, another cosmetic and functional procedure, minimises breast size by removing a surplus of skin, fat, and tissue from the breasts. A mastopexy, or breast elevation procedure, raises the breasts to create a youthful appearance.

Facial Rejuvenation

Facial rejuvenation aims to restore facial harmony through specific facial surgeries such as eyelid surgery and the use of fillers to re-plump the area around the eyes and restore the natural jawline and volume lost to the cheeks. Facial rejuvenation involves surgical and non-surgical treatments such as blepharoplasty, facelift, Botox, and fillers.

Non-surgical Treatments (Botox, fillers & chemical peels)

Not everyone needs surgery to enhance the appearance of their facial features. This is why most people consider non-invasive procedures such as fillers, Botox, and chemical peels. These types of treatments brighten and even out the skin, restore lost volume, and refine facial features. Botox is a commonly used facial rejuvenation treatment that relies on a toxin to paralyse the facial muscles, restricting the movement of these muscles. Botox involves administering a certain degree of the toxin through injections in specific parts of the face, which smooths fine lines over the face. Conversely, fillers perform a similar function by smoothing lines over the face by plumping these regions with specific injections.

Chemical peels vary in degree, some removing superficial layers of skin, others removing a greater extent of these skin layers. Most people use chemical peels to address hyperpigmentation, skin discolouration, scars, acne, and wrinkles.

Mini Facelift

Unlike a full facelift, a mini facelift focuses on a specific region of the face, such as the lower part of the face, which involves resecting extra skin from the neck, jawline, and chin or tightening these areas of the face. Jowls are lax skin that droops from the jawline. Jowls are quite common as we age due to the loss of skin elasticity. Fortunately, a mini facelift effectively treats sagging facial skin from the lower part of the face and involves a faster recovery than a traditional facelift.

Blepharoplasty

A blepharoplasty aims to enhance the area around the eyes, creating a youthful, alert, and bright-looking appearance. The natural ageing process affects the appearance of the eyelids, causing the lids to stretch and the supportive muscles to weaken. As a result of ageing, extra fat and skin accumulate above and below the eyelids. Therefore, a blepharoplasty entails the removal of excess skin from the eyelids, enabling a brighter, more alert appearance and reducing the signs of ageing, such as bags underneath the eyes, droopy eyebrows, and upper eyelids.

Treatment for Keloids

A keloid is an elevated scar that develops from a skin injury, which usually occurs in specific regions of the body such as the chest, shoulders, cheeks, or earlobes. Treatment for keloids typically requires cutting out the keloids. Even though keloids can be removed surgically, the recurrence rate is quite high, which is why a secondary treatment, like cortisone injections, scar massage and ointments, is required.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a widely executed procedure to remove (suction) fat from specific locations in the body, particularly the hips, stomach, buttocks, thighs, neck, and arms. Liposuction aims to remove unwanted, excessive amounts of fat from the body to contour specific regions of the body; this is done to create a toned, well-defined body. A suction device connected to a tiny instrument (cannula) is shifted around regions of the body to liquefy the extra fat. Then, a syringe or pipe is used to remove the fat, and the area of the body is closed using stitches.

Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty, also referred to as a "tummy tuck,” involves tightening and removing extra fat from the stomach. The procedure focuses on removing a surplus of fat and skin and strengthening the abdominal wall muscles. An abdominoplasty is often part of a “mommy make-over”. This enhances the physical appearance of the abdomen by restoring the strength of the muscles in the abdominal wall.

Post-massive Weight Loss Excess Skin Excision

Excessive skin excision following weight loss is referred to as “Panniculectomy”. A Panniculectomy aims to remove loose, hanging skin and excess fat from a particular region of the body, such as the abdomen. Surgery is normally recommended after you've lost so much weight. The skin may be so loose that it sags, covering areas like the genitals and thighs. These operations can also address excess skin on arms and legs and reshape droopy breasts.

Brachioplasty

Brachioplasty is a cosmetic enhancement surgery that targets the upper arms and axilla by recontouring these regions. A brachioplasty entails the removal of extra skin and fat (lipodystrophy) from the upper arm. As a result, the procedure helps reshape and tone the upper arms.
