TREATMENT FOR KELOIDS

Keloids are signs of the body's protective response to a skin injury, such as acne scars or burns. While they may flatten over time, some prefer to have them surgically removed. When the skin is injured, fibrous tissue (scar tissue) forms at the injury site, leading to hardened, smooth growths (keloids). Keloids can be expansive, sometimes appearing much larger than the original wound. They can occur anywhere on the body but are commonly found on the cheeks, earlobes, shoulders, and chest.

The formation of keloids, due to excessive scar tissue development, can take weeks or months to fully develop. They manifest in the following ways:

  • Localised region of the skin that appears pink, red or flesh-coloured.
  • Raised area of the skin.
  • Patch of itchy skin

Keloid scars may become itchy, but are generally not considered harmful and are usually removed for cosmetic reasons.

HOW DO YOU SURGICALLY TREAT KELOIDS?

Surgery may be reserved for expansive keloids or old keloid scars. While there’s still a possibility of postoperative scarring, the benefits outweigh the risks substantially. Corticosteroid injections are routinely performed at 6 week intervals after surgery to minimise inflammation and reduce the risk of keloid recurrence.

Silicone gel or sheets are also used after surgery and Dr Botha will teach you how to massage your scar.

OUTCOME

Even though keloids rarely cause adverse effects, they can be unsightly. Fortunately, you can decide to treat keloids at any time, even years after they appear. Dr Botha will discuss the various treatment options with you to determine the best approach for keloid removal.
